Dharma of Education System in India

India's knowledge system as a whole and the compartmentalizing and super specialization inherent in the existing education system was never our way. In grooming super specialists we lack specialists and as a result miss the good for the trees. Why do we need to ape behind the western education system when we have Ramayana and Mahabharata? All the students should know not just to learn the history but they should also know the thought process it carries and how they can imbibe them in their life.

The sacred thoughts of educational values have lost their way in the name of economic development of the nation. If knowledge and thought processes of the ancient universities are kept intact, we will have the largest number of research scholars then around the world which will have a different thought process altogether and no one will ever be able to match them. India is very fortunate to have a secular and democratic society and we should protect those values and incorporate them in our curriculum.

I always Quote “A degree doesn’t make you a good teacher”, but a person should be able to impart that effectively to others. Teaching is an art which we need to develop.

Nowadays, when we say we should have a student centric approach, do we really have it? Every human has potential in many different ways and unique qualities. It is up to us as teachers we need to perceive them in every student. A student should be treated fairly regardless of their grade. In fact I would say we should concentrate on the weak, that is the real challenge, duty and dharma of a teacher. Every child has his or her qualities and we should let it bloom naturally and appreciate them for what they are, as teachers and as well as parents. The rat race does not really bring out the best from the pupils in fact it kills her creativity and talent and passion.

When we talk about the practical aspect of learning today, we need to do many things to achieve excellence. We should give space and time to every teacher to grow as well.  Over burdening them with teaching and administrative responsibilities which is the recent trend, is the swapping the energy of teachers. A teacher’s job is to impart knowledge and to inspire. She should be motivated and encouraged in research and keep herself up to date with the practical world. A society who doesn’t respect the teachers and suppresses them will not see her children bloom and grow in the best way possible.

A feeling of shishya Guru and mutual respect for each other has to be there or else we will remain in the situation currently we are in.  The amount of increase in cases in the university relating to ragging, student teacher relationship is a shame. A line is to be drawn in between, by following the ideal Gurukul method and reaching the ultimate moral grounds.

We need to retain our cultural ethos, core human values along with subject knowledge. This leads to the best education system in India.

The new education policy  has paved its way to have a fresh start to the educational system which talks about including the mother tongue in the curriculum and various other transformations. It talks of learning rather than rote learning, grades rather than marks and vocationalisation. All of which will help in bringing India into the 21st century in the real sense. The government is doing every bit of it but as citizens and representatives of the education system of India are we doing our bit?

Time for a WAKE UP CALL.
